ROBA Orbital

Sanding method

The ROBA Orbital 3T is designed for customers who need a perfect surface for thermofoiled or lacquered workpieces based on high-quality sanding, or for users who produce cabinet doors in shaker design with a recessed center panel made of MDF or solid wood.

The latter struggles with one problem in particular: If these fronts are made of MDF and the insert is created by clearing with a CNC router, tool lines are unavoidable. The overlapping of the tool path must always be completely removed, otherwise they holograph through a PVC foil or paint layer.

With furniture fronts made of wood-based material, the challenge is different. Veneered fillings, raw or lacquered, must be sanded smoothly to ensure a top final finish. In the case of framed cabinet doors, it is important to remove the cross-grain scratches on the transversal rails created by the wide belt sander.

The ROBA Orbital 3T is equipped with two sanding units, which are developed and built at MB. The unit with the round sanding disc creates a typical orbital sander surface whose chaotic sanding pattern leaves no visible traces.

The rectangular unit uses eccentric sanding technology, which ensures that you can reach in a defined way into the workpiece corners. Therefore, the unit with the rectangular sanding pad is predestined for the center panel area and the unit with the round sanding pad for the frame rails or plain surfaces.

The three tables of the machine ensure a high capacity as they work independently: one table is loaded, parts processed on the second and the last table is emptied. This creates a constant, high-performance workflow in a safe and dust-free environment.

The three-dimensional workpiece measurement via laser is carried out separately and automatically on each vacuum table, while the respective part is moving into the machining area. In a matter of seconds the system detects both frame widths and recessed filling size and precisely adapts the sanding process to the measured geometry. If parts of same size are sanded consecutively, the measuring process is limited only to the first part, what speeds up the process. All sanding parameters can be individually adjusted to the respective application. Long parts, such as bedroom doors, can be placed on an optional 2400 mm long table.

An automatic and program-controlled tool changer at the back of each worktable provides fresh sanding pads. This results in a constant sanding quality with high output.

Advantages of the ROBA Orbital principle summarized

  1. Perfect sanding quality for MDF and wooden or veneered surfaces
  2. Avoids visible sanding marks
  3. Two sanding systems in one machine
  4. High output due to parallel processing
  5. Automatic and programmable tool changer to equip fresh sanding pads
